What is Panchang, and why does it matter?

Its five parts — tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (moon’s constellation), yoga and karana — are calculated from the exact positions of the Sun and Moon, so the panchang changes every day and shifts slightly by city. People consult it to know the day’s tithi, choose an auspicious muhurat for important work, and identify vrat and festival days.
