Definition & classical context
Dosha (Sanskrit: doṣa, "fault", "flaw", or "imbalance") in Jyotish refers to any defined condition in a birth chart that classical texts associate with challenges, delays, obstacles, or suffering in specific domains of life. The term is closely related to its use in Ayurveda (the three bodily humours: vata, pitta, kapha), where dosha also means constitutional imbalance. In astrology, doshas are produced by particular planets occupying specific houses or signs, by certain planetary combinations, or by aspects from malefic planets (Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, and sometimes Sun) on sensitive points.
The most frequently discussed doshas in contemporary Jyotish are Manglik Dosha (Mars in certain houses affecting marriage), Kaal Sarp Dosha (all planets hemmed between Rahu and Ketu), Pitra Dosha (indicating ancestors requiring spiritual attention), Nadi Dosha (a compatibility issue in guna milan), and Grahan Dosha (Rahu or Ketu conjunct the Sun or Moon at birth). Each is described in classical texts with specific house placements, contextual conditions, and recommended remedial measures.
Classical texts also carefully describe conditions under which doshas are cancelled (dosha nivarana or dosha bhanga). For example, Manglik Dosha is often cancelled when Mars is in its own sign, exalted, or aspected by a benefic planet, or when both partners share the same dosha. Remedial measures (upayas) for doshas typically include mantra recitation, gemstone recommendations, fasting on specific days associated with the afflicting planet, charitable acts, and pujas performed at appropriate temples.
