Kaal Sarp Dosha — Vedic Astrology Explained

A chart configuration where all seven classical planets are hemmed between Rahu and Ketu on the same side of the chart.

Definition & classical context

Kaal Sarp Dosha (Sanskrit: kāla, "time" or "death"; sarpa, "serpent"; doṣa, "flaw") describes a natal chart configuration in which all seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn — are placed in the arc of the zodiac between Rahu (the North Node) and Ketu (the South Node) on the same side, leaving the opposing half of the chart unoccupied by any classical planet. The name evokes the image of the serpent of time hemming in all of life's energies, suggesting that the native's karma is strongly coloured by the nodal axis and its past-life themes.

Classically, Kaal Sarp Dosha is associated with recurring obstacles, delayed achievements, struggles against the current, intense karmic lessons, and an often turbulent but ultimately instructive life path. Twelve varieties are recognised based on which pair of houses Rahu and Ketu occupy, each carrying its own thematic emphasis — from challenges in career and public recognition to difficulties in relationships or with ancestral karma. Traditional remedies include performing specific Naga (serpent deity) pujas, reciting the Kaal Sarp mantra, and visiting temples associated with serpent worship such as Trimbakeshwar in Nashik.

Contemporary astrologers note that several conditions can modify the dosha's severity: the presence of any classical planet in the Rahu–Ketu axis, the strength and placement of Rahu and Ketu themselves, and the dasha periods active in the native's life. Many individuals with Kaal Sarp Dosha lead accomplished and meaningful lives, with the configuration sometimes associated with intense drive, spiritual depth, and a strong capacity to overcome adversity through sustained effort.
