What are planetary transits (Gochar)?

A transit — Gochar in Vedic astrology — is simply where a planet is positioned in the sky right now, compared against the fixed positions in your birth chart. Your natal chart never changes; it is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born. The planets themselves, however, keep moving, and Vedic astrology reads the relationship between where a planet is today and where your natal Moon (and other natal points) sit as a way of timing current events and short-to-long term life themes.

Vedic transit analysis is distinctive in one key respect: it is read primarily from the Moon sign (Rashi), not the ascendant — a departure from how transits are typically discussed in Western astrology. The house a transiting planet falls in, counted from your natal Moon, is the starting point for interpreting its effect.

How to read a transit — step by step

1. Know your natal Moon sign. If you haven't already, find it with the Moon Sign Calculator — this is the reference point every transit is measured against.
2. Check the current position of the planet in question. The calculator above shows today's real-time planetary positions using the same sidereal (Lahiri) system as the rest of this site.
3. Count the house from your Moon sign. Count how many signs the transiting planet is from your natal Moon sign to find which house, from the Moon, it is currently transiting.
4. Consider the planet's speed and nature. A fast-moving transit (Moon, Mercury, Venus) is short-lived and best read for day-scale timing; a slow transit (Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu/Ketu) marks a theme that plays out over months or years.
5. Weigh it against your natal chart. The same transit lands differently depending on what that house and sign mean in your own birth chart, and on your current dasha period — transits are read as an overlay on the natal promise, not a script of their own.

How each planet's transit cycle differs

Saturn, Jupiter and Sade Sati

Because Saturn and Jupiter move slowly, their transits get particular attention. Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from the natal Moon is traditionally called Sade Sati ("seven and a half years") — a long phase associated with discipline, restructuring and maturation rather than automatic misfortune; how it plays out depends heavily on Saturn's dignity and the rest of the chart. Jupiter's transit, by contrast, is generally read for expansion and opportunity, especially when it moves through supportive houses from the Moon.
