What is Western astrology?

Western astrology is the tradition most people encounter first — the twelve-sign system behind newspaper horoscopes and the “what’s your sign” small talk. It maps a birth chart onto the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons: 0° Aries always falls on the Spring Equinox, regardless of which constellation the Sun actually sits in front of that day. A full Western chart looks at the Sun, Moon and planets by sign and house, plus the angles they form with each other (aspects), to build a picture of personality and life themes.

This is different from the Vedic (Jyotish) system used throughout the rest of Astrologger, which is sidereal— aligned to the actual, observable position of the stars using the Lahiri ayanamsa. Because the equinox point has drifted against the fixed stars over centuries (a slow wobble called precession), tropical and sidereal signs are now roughly 24° apart. A person born under tropical Sun in Scorpio is very often a sidereal (Vedic) Libra. Neither system is “wrong” — they are two different reference frames with different histories and different techniques built on top of them.

How to read a Western birth chart — step by step

1. Enter your date, time and place of birth in the calculator above. Time and place matter because they fix your Ascendant and house positions, not just your Sun sign.
2. Start with your Sun sign. This is your core identity and how you express your basic character — the sign most people mean when they ask “what’s your sign”.
3. Check your Moon sign. This describes your emotional nature and inner reactions — often felt more privately than the Sun sign.
4. Find your Ascendant (Rising sign). This is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth moment; it colours your outward manner and first impressions, and shifts roughly every two hours, so an accurate birth time is essential.
5. Review the planet table and aspects the calculator returns — the angles between planets (conjunctions, trines, squares, oppositions) show how different parts of your personality support or challenge each other.

The 12 tropical signs, elements and modalities

Every sign is classified by an element (its basic energy) and a modality (how it moves through that energy):

The four elements — Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn), Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — describe temperament: action, practicality, ideas and emotion respectively. The three modalities — Cardinal (initiators), Fixed (sustainers) and Mutable (adapters) — describe how each sign moves through its season. A sign is always one element and one modality, never a fixed personality verdict on its own.

Why the Sun-Moon-Rising combination matters

A single Sun sign is only one-twelfth of a chart. Western astrologers place real weight on the Sun–Moon–Rising combination because it captures identity, emotion and outward presentation together — which is why two people who share a Sun sign can feel quite different once their Moon and Ascendant are accounted for. Western vs Vedic — which should you use?

Neither tradition “replaces” the other; they simply measure the sky differently and emphasise different techniques — Western astrology leans on psychological archetypes and aspects, while Vedic astrology adds nakshatras (lunar mansions), dashas (planetary time periods) and remedial measures on top of a sidereal chart.
