Atmakaraka & Darakaraka Calculator

Your charakarakas are the movable significators of Jaimini astrology. Enter your birth details to find your Atmakaraka — the planet holding the highest degree, said to carry your soul's deepest theme — and your Darakaraka, the lowest-degree planet, traditionally linked to partnership and the spouse.

Your birth details are used only for this calculation.

What are Atmakaraka and Darakaraka?

Atmakaraka and Darakaraka belong to the Chara Karaka system of Jaimini astrology, a parallel branch of Vedic astrology that reads a chart by planetary degree rather than by house lordship alone. The Atmakaraka — "significator of the self" — is whichever of the seven classical planets (Sun through Saturn, excluding Rahu and Ketu in the traditional seven-karaka scheme) sits at the highest degree within its own sign, anywhere in the chart. It is treated as the planet closest to the soul's own agenda in this life.

The Darakaraka — "significator of the spouse" — is the planet at the lowest degree among the same seven. Because it is derived purely by degree rather than by which house a planet occupies, the Darakaraka's house and sign placement is used specifically to read the nature of marriage and significant partnerships, distinct from what the 7th house alone shows.

How to find your Atmakaraka and Darakaraka — step by step

  1. Enter your date, time and place of birth. Precise degrees matter here — even a few minutes of birth-time error can, in rare cases, shift which planet ranks highest or lowest.
  2. List the degree, within its sign, of each of the seven classical planets. Every planet is measured on a 0°–30° scale within whatever sign it occupies, regardless of which sign that is.
  3. Rank the planets from highest degree to lowest. This ranking, not house position, is what defines the Chara Karakas.
  4. Read off the two ends. The highest-degree planet is your Atmakaraka; the lowest-degree planet is your Darakaraka. The five in between take the remaining Chara Karaka roles, in order.
  5. Note the house each falls in. The house and sign of the Atmakaraka is central to Jaimini predictive techniques (such as the Karakamsha chart); the house of the Darakaraka is read for clues about marriage timing and the partner's nature. The calculator above ranks all seven planets by degree and returns each karaka automatically.

The seven Chara Karakas

Ranked from highest degree to lowest, the seven planets take on these roles:

Atmakaraka (AK) (significator of the self) — the soul, core identity and the central lesson of this lifetime.
Amatyakaraka (AmK) (significator of the minister) — career, ability and the means by which the person achieves their purpose.
Bhratrikaraka (BK) (significator of siblings) — courage, siblings and close allies.
Matrikaraka (MK) (significator of the mother) — mother, home, emotional foundation.
Putrakaraka (PK) (significator of children) — children, intelligence, creativity.
Gnatikaraka (GK) (significator of relatives/obstacles) — extended family, obstacles, health matters.
Darakaraka (DK) (significator of the spouse) — marriage, partnership and significant one-to-one relationships.

Why Atmakaraka and Darakaraka matter

The Atmakaraka is the starting point for several Jaimini techniques, most notably the Karakamsha chart (the Navamsha sign the Atmakaraka occupies), which Jaimini astrologers read alongside the standard birth chart for insight into a person's core purpose and spiritual direction. The Darakaraka is consulted specifically for marriage-related questions, complementing what the 7th house and its lord already indicate. As with any single technique, the Chara Karakas are one layer of a much larger system — Jaimini astrology is traditionally read together with the classical (Parashari) chart, not as a replacement for it. How the charakarakas are calculated

For each planet we take the degrees it has travelled within its current sign, from 0 to 30, and rank them from highest to lowest. The highest becomes the Atmakaraka (soul), and the lowest the Darakaraka (spouse), with the karakas in between covering mind, siblings, mother, children and more. The 7-karaka method uses the seven classical planets; the 8-karaka method also includes Rahu, measured by the degree it has yet to cross. An accurate birth time gives the most reliable degrees.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Atmakaraka?
The Atmakaraka is the planet with the highest degree in your chart. In Jaimini astrology it is called the 'soul significator' and is read as a pointer to the central theme or lesson of your life — a lens for reflection rather than a fixed prediction.
What does the Darakaraka say about my spouse?
The Darakaraka is the lowest-degree planet and is traditionally associated with the partner or spouse; its nature is said to describe qualities you are drawn to in a relationship. Treat it as a classical tendency, not a literal forecast of who you will meet.
What is the difference between the 7 and 8 charakaraka schemes?
The 7-karaka (Parashari) scheme ranks only the seven classical planets. The 8-karaka scheme also includes Rahu, using the degree it still has to travel because it moves backwards. Both are used by respected traditions, and this calculator lets you switch between them.
Do I need my exact birth time?
The karakas depend on precise planetary degrees, which shift with the birth time, so an accurate time gives the most reliable ranking. Without a time we use noon, and planets close in degree may swap places — treat those results as approximate.
Is Ketu a charakaraka?
No. Ketu is never counted among the charakarakas in either scheme. Only the seven classical planets — and Rahu, in the 8-karaka method — take part in the ranking.
