What is name compatibility (numerology)?

Name compatibility is a branch of Western numerology that assigns a single-digit number to a name and compares two people’s numbers to describe their dynamic. The number is called the Expression(or Destiny) number — derived purely from the letters of a name, not from a birth date. The idea, rooted in the Pythagorean tradition, is that every letter carries a numeric vibration, and a name’s combined vibration says something about temperament and how two people’s energies interact.

This is a traditional system best enjoyed for reflection and fun — it uses only the letters in a name, so a nickname, a legal name and a married name will each produce a different number for the same person.

How to check your name compatibility — step by step

1. Enter the first name in the calculator above — a first name, full name or nickname all work.
2. Enter the second name.
3. Each letter is converted to a number using the Pythagorean system: A=1, B=2, C=3 … I=9, then the sequence repeats (J=1, K=2 … R=9, S=1 … Z=8).
4. The letter values are summed and reduced to a single digit — unless the sum passes through 11 or 22, which the Pythagorean tradition preserves as “master numbers.”
5. The two Expression numbers are compared using classical numerology relationships to produce your compatibility score and reading.
