What is numerology?

Numerology is the traditional practice of reducing meaningful numbers — usually a birth date and the letters of a name — to single digits, each carrying a distinct classical meaning. In the Indian (Vedic) tradition, the two foundational numbers are the Mulank (root or Driving Number, from the day of birth alone) and the Bhagyank(Destiny Number, from the full date of birth). This calculator shows them as “Life Path (Moolank)” and “Destiny (Bhagyank)” alongside a Western-style Soul Urge number drawn from the vowels of your name.

Numerology is a traditional system carried forward through classical texts and long-standing cultural practice, not a scientifically validated method of prediction. It is best used as a lens for reflection — a way of noticing themes in a name or birth date — rather than as a deterministic forecast of what will happen.

How your core numbers are calculated — step by step

1. Enter your full name and date of birth. The date drives the Life Path (Mulank) and Destiny (Bhagyank) numbers; the name drives the Destiny (Expression) and Soul Urge numbers.
2. Mulank / Life Path root: take just the day of the month and reduce its digits to one digit — the 23rd becomes 2 + 3 = 5.
3. Bhagyank / Destiny: add every digit of the full date — day, month and year — together, then keep reducing until one digit remains.
4. Soul Urge: the vowels of your full name are each mapped to a number (see the letter-value tables below) and summed, then reduced — read as your inner desire.

Numerology letter values — Pythagorean & Chaldean

Name numbers come from mapping each letter to a digit and adding them up. Two systems are used: the Pythagorean (Western, letters valued 1–9 in order) and the older Chaldean(letters valued 1–8, as 9 is treated as sacred). Our calculator uses the Pythagorean values.
