How your dasha timeline is calculated

Vimshottari dasha runs on a fixed 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods. Your starting point is set by the Moon's nakshatra at birth, which determines which planet's period you were born into and how much of it remained. From there the mahadashas follow a set order, each subdivided into antardashas and pratyantardashas. This tool computes your sidereal (Lahiri) chart, finds the period running now, and lays out the whole timeline — a precise birth time and place make the current period more accurate.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vimshottari dasha?
Vimshottari dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. It divides life into a fixed 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods (mahadashas), each ruled by a planet, and is read as a map of which planetary themes are active at a given time.
What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?
A mahadasha is a major period ruled by one planet, lasting from about six to twenty years. Within each mahadasha are shorter antardashas (sub-periods) ruled by all nine planets in turn, which colour the main period. Pratyantardashas divide it further still.
How is the current period worked out?
Your dasha sequence is anchored to the Moon's nakshatra at birth, which sets your starting planet and how far into its period you were born. From there the periods run in a fixed order, so an accurate birth time and place give a more reliable current period.
Are dasha predictions certain?
No. Dasha describes the seasons and themes traditionally associated with each planetary period — timing and tendencies, not fixed events or fate. It is best used as a lens for reflection and planning rather than a guarantee of specific outcomes.
How long does each Mahadasha last?
Each planet's Vimshottari Mahadasha has a fixed length — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years — totalling 120 years. Which one you are running, and how far into it you are, is worked out from your birth Moon nakshatra; enter your details above to see your current period.
