Numerology (Ank Jyotish): Numbers 1 to 9, Mulank and Calculators

Numerology, called ank jyotish in India, is the traditional practice of reducing a date of birth or a name to single digits from 1 to 9 and reading the theme of each digit. Indian numerology links every digit to one of the nine planets of Jyotish. Your core numbers are the Mulank (birth day), the Bhagyank (full date) and the Namank (name).

Mulank vs Bhagyank vs Namank

Indian numerology works with three core numbers. This site uses one name for each, so the pages and calculators always agree:

NumberComes fromAlso calledRead as
MulankThe day of the month you were bornMoolank, root, psychic or birthday numberEveryday temperament
BhagyankYour full date of birth, every digit addedDestiny number (Indian usage), Life Path (Western)Broader life direction
NamankThe letters of your nameName number, Expression (Western books also say Destiny)How you express yourself

For example, someone born on 19 August 1990 has Mulank 1 (1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0) and Bhagyank 1 (1 + 9 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 37, then 10, then 1). When a page here says “number 7” on its own, it means Mulank 7, which is how people searching for “numerology number 7” use the phrase.

Indian vs Western numerology

Both systems reduce numbers to single digits, but they differ in three ways that explain most of the disagreements you see between websites.

  • Planets. Indian numerology gives the nine digits to the nine grahas of Jyotish, including the shadow planets Rahu (4) and Ketu (7). Western numerology, following Cheiro, gives 4 to Uranus and 7 to Neptune. The other seven agree: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.
  • Which number leads. Indian readings start from the Mulank and Bhagyank, both from the birth date. Western readings start from the Life Path, the same arithmetic as the Bhagyank, and give the name numbers more weight.
  • Reduction. The Mulank system always reduces to 1–9. Western numerology often keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers.

Letter values differ too: the Pythagorean table runs A to Z through 1–9, while the older Chaldean table, common in Indian name numerology, uses 1–8. The numerology calculator shows both tables. The Lo Shu grid is a third, Chinese approach that keeps every digit of the date rather than reducing it.

What numerology can and cannot tell you

Numerology is a traditional system of symbols, not a science. It describes tendencies associated with a number; it does not predict events, and no number is good or bad in itself. It should never decide a medical, legal or financial question, and nothing about it requires a purchase, a ritual or a new spelling of your name.

What it does well is offer a simple mirror for reflection: a vocabulary for noticing how you tend to act, decide and relate. Your kundli is the fuller picture in Vedic astrology, worked out from the actual planetary positions at your birth.

Numerology: frequently asked questions

What is my numerology number?

In Indian numerology the number people usually mean is the Mulank: the day of the month you were born, reduced to one digit. Born on the 25th? 2 + 5 = 7, so your Mulank is 7. Your Bhagyank, from the full date, is the second core number.

What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?

The Mulank uses only the birth day and is read as everyday temperament. The Bhagyank adds every digit of the full date of birth and is read as broader life direction. In Indian usage the Bhagyank is also called the destiny number; Western books call it the Life Path.

Which planet rules each number?

In Indian numerology: 1 the Sun, 2 the Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. Western numerology agrees except for 4 (Uranus) and 7 (Neptune).

Is numerology the same as astrology?

No. Astrology reads the positions of the planets at the moment of birth, which needs the exact time and place. Numerology works from the digits of a date or name only, and borrows the planets as symbols for each digit.

Can numerology predict the future?

No. Numerology is a traditional system for reflection, not a method of prediction. It describes tendencies associated with a number; what happens in a life depends on far more than a birth date.
