What is a Rashi?

Rashi is the Sanskrit term for zodiac sign, and in everyday Vedic-astrology usage it refers specifically to your Moon sign— the sign the Moon occupied at the exact moment of your birth. This is different from the “sun sign” most people know from Western newspaper horoscopes. Because the Moon moves quickly through the zodiac, spending only about 2¼ days in each sign, your Rashi is a far more time-sensitive, personal placement than the Sun sign.

In Vedic astrology the Moon represents the mind, emotions, instincts and habitual reactions. For that reason, the Rashi — not the Sun sign — is treated as the primary reference point for daily and yearly horoscopes, for kundli matching, and for the Vimshottari dasha timing system.

Rashi vs Sun sign

The Sun sign (used in most Western and newspaper horoscopes) tracks the Sun’s position and changes only once a month. The Rashi tracks the Moon and can change every two to three days — so two people born on the same date can easily have different Rashis, while people born days apart can share one. Vedic astrology developed around the Moon rather than the Sun for a specific reason: the Moon’s faster movement and its rulership over the mind made it a more granular, individually distinguishing marker for a birth chart, and it is directly tied to the 27 nakshatras that drive the dasha (planetary period) system.
