What each Choghadiya means
There are seven Choghadiya, each ruled by a planet, and the whole system is just those seven repeating. Four are usable and three are avoided — but "avoided" is specific rather than blanket, and each of the three has a traditional exception.
| Choghadiya | Lord | Nature | Traditionally used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amrit | Moon | Good | Anything that matters: a marriage talk, a first purchase, medicine, a new venture. |
| Shubh | Jupiter | Good | Weddings, ceremonies, signing agreements, worship. |
| Labh | Mercury | Good | Business, trade, starting education, anything you want a return from. |
| Char | Venus | Neutral | Travel and anything mobile; commonly used when no better window is free. |
| Udveg | Sun | Avoid | Avoided for new beginnings. Government and official work is the traditional exception. |
| Rog | Mars | Avoid | Avoided generally; tradition allows it for confrontation and competition. |
| Kaal | Saturn | Avoid | Avoided for beginnings. Traditionally permitted for accumulating — savings, stock. |
How today’s order is set in New Delhi
The day’s first Choghadiya is always the one ruled by that weekday’s own planet — Sunday belongs to the Sun, so it opens with Udveg; Monday belongs to the Moon, so it opens with Amrit. From there the day walks through the seven in a fixed order, Udveg → Char → Labh → Amrit → Kaal → Shubh → Rog, one step per window. After sunset the same seven repeat, but the night steps five at a time instead of one, which is why the night list never matches the day list.
| Weekday | Day begins with | Night begins with |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Udveg | Shubh |
| Monday | Amrit | Char |
| Tuesday | Rog | Kaal |
| Wednesday | Labh | Udveg |
| Thursday | Shubh | Amrit |
| Friday | Char | Rog |
| Saturday (today) | Kaal | Labh |
Today being Saturday, the sequence runs Kaal → Shubh → Rog → Udveg … in daylight, and the tables above give the exact windows for New Delhi.
Choosing a window for a real task
Choghadiya is the quick muhurta — the one people actually use when a proper muhurta has not been drawn up. The practical order is simple: Amrit first, then Shubh, then Labh, then Char. Travel is traditionally started in Char, money and trade in Labh, ceremonies and agreements in Shubh, and anything you want to last in Amrit.
Two cautions keep it honest. A good Choghadiya does not cancel Rahu Kaal — when the two overlap, tradition still avoids beginning, so check both before fixing a time. And Choghadiya is a coarse instrument: it knows the weekday and your sunrise, and nothing about your chart. For a wedding, a business registration or a house-warming, a muhurta drawn from the birth chart is the right tool, and this page is only the first filter.
Check the same day’s Rahu Kaal before you commit to a window.
Choghadiya, Chaughadiya, Chogadiya — one system
Choghadiya, Chaughadiya and Chogadiya are spellings of the same word, चौघड़िया: "chau" (four) and "ghadi", the traditional 24-minute unit, because each window lasts roughly four ghadis — about an hour and a half. Whatever the spelling, the windows on this page are the same. To check a different date or city, use the Choghadiya calculator.
Why these timings are specific to New Delhi
Sunrise in New Delhi today is 06:38 am. Every window on this page is a fraction of the interval between local sunrise and sunset, so it moves with the place as well as the date. India keeps one clock, set to the 82.5°E meridian, but New Delhi sits about 5.3° west of it — roughly 21 minutes behind that meridian in solar terms. The sun therefore reaches the same position over New Delhi 21 minutes later than the clock suggests, and each of the eight parts shifts with it. That is why a Rahu Kaal or Choghadiya table copied from one city’s page is simply the wrong table for another, and why this page computes from New Delhi's own coordinates rather than reusing one national set of timings.
Questions
When is a good Choghadiya today in New Delhi?
Today (Saturday, 7 November 2026) the good Choghadiya windows (Amrit, Shubh, Labh) in New Delhi are Shubh · 8:00–9:22 am; Labh · 1:28–2:49 pm; Amrit · 2:49–4:11 pm (IST). The full day and night table is in the New Delhi section below.
Is Choghadiya the same in every city?
No. Choghadiya divides each city’s own sunrise-to-sunset and sunset-to-sunrise into eight parts, so the clock times shift from city to city — the table above lists today’s for 24 cities. On any one date the names and their order are the same everywhere; only the times move.
Choghadiya or Chaughadiya — same thing?
Yes. Choghadiya, Chaughadiya and Chogadiya are spellings of one word, चौघड़िया: "chau" (four) and "ghadi" (a 24-minute unit), because each window lasts roughly four ghadis.
Which Choghadiya are good?
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the good windows, and they are the ones this page lists. Char is neutral-good and is used for travel. Udveg, Rog and Kaal are avoided for new beginnings.
What if a good Choghadiya overlaps Rahu Kaal?
A good Choghadiya does not cancel Rahu Kaal. Where the two overlap, tradition still avoids beginning something important, so check both before fixing a time.
