How Guna Milan works

Guna Milan uses the Ashtakoota system — eight factors (kootas) that together carry a maximum of 36 points: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8). Each koota is derived from the Moon Nakshatra of each partner. The tool also checks Manglik Dosha — the position of Mars in certain houses — and flags Nadi Dosha along with any traditional cancellations. Together, the Ashtakoota score and the Manglik status give a holistic picture of marriage compatibility, helping couples and families evaluate long-term harmony before deciding on a union.

Frequently asked questions

What is Guna Milan?
Guna Milan (also called Kundli Milan or Horoscope Matching) is a Vedic astrology system that compares the birth charts of two people to assess marriage compatibility. It evaluates eight qualities — the Ashtakoota — and assigns a total score out of 36.
How many gunas are needed for a good match?
A score of 18 or more is considered the minimum for a compatible match. Scores between 24 and 32 are considered good, and 32 to 36 are considered excellent. A score below 18 generally indicates significant incompatibilities.
Is Manglik Dosha a dealbreaker?
Not necessarily. Manglik Dosha (Mars affliction) is considered serious in traditional Vedic astrology, but many astrologers note that it can be cancelled by certain planetary positions or when both partners are Manglik. This tool shows the Dosha status and any applicable cancellations.
Is Kundli matching free on Astrologger?
Yes. The Guna Milan compatibility check is completely free — no account or payment required. You can also download the full matching report as a PDF at no cost.
Do I need the exact birth time for Kundli matching?
Birth time improves the accuracy of Nakshatra-based calculations (especially Varna and Nadi koota). If you don't have the exact time, the tool defaults to noon, which gives a reliable result for most kootas. Providing the birth place also helps with timezone-accurate results.
