What is Lagna (Ascendant)?

Lagna, or the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and location of your birth. As the Earth rotates, a new sign rises roughly every two hours, so the Lagna is the most time-sensitive point in the entire birth chart — more sensitive even than the Moon sign. It marks the beginning of the 1st house, and every other house in the kundli is numbered outward from it.

Because the Ascendant sets the entire house framework of the chart, it is often considered as important as — or by some traditions more important than — the Moon sign or Sun sign when reading a full horoscope. It shapes physical appearance, temperament, and how a person tends to approach the world.

How to find your Lagna — step by step

1. Enter your date of birth. This fixes which part of the year, and therefore roughly which stretch of signs, could be rising.
