What is a Sun Sign (Surya Rashi)?

Your Sun sign — Surya Rashi in Vedic astrology — is the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through at the moment of your birth. The Sun represents the soul, willpower, vitality and sense of self, so the Sun sign is read as a marker of core identity and life direction, moving through roughly one sign per month.

There is an important catch: the Vedic (sidereal) Sun sign and the Western (tropical) sun sign you may already know from newspaper horoscopes are usually not the same sign, even for the identical birth date. Understanding why is the key to using this calculator correctly.

Sidereal vs tropical — why Vedic astrology gives a different answer

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is fixed to the seasons — 0° Aries is always defined as the spring equinox point, regardless of where the actual constellations sit in the sky today. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is fixed to the actual, observable positions of the constellations. Because Earth’s axis wobbles very slowly over thousands of years (a motion called precession), the equinox point has drifted away from where it was roughly 2,000 years ago when the two systems aligned. Today that drift — the ayanamsa— is close to 24°, which is enough to shift most people’s Sun sign back by about one sign compared to the tropical placement they may be used to. Vedic astrology corrects for this drift deliberately, on the reasoning that a horoscope should reflect where the Sun actually is against the fixed stars, not where the equinox was millennia ago.
