Raja yogas are classical planetary combinations traditionally linked with success, status and good fortune. Enter your birth details to see which raja yogas — and other yogas — are present in your Vedic birth chart, with what each one means.

What is Raj Yoga?

Raj Yoga — literally "royal combination" — is a category of planetary alignments in Vedic astrology traditionally associated with rising status, authority, wealth and recognition. It is not a single placement but a family of yogas, most of them built on a relationship between a kendra house (the pillar houses 1, 4, 7 and 10) and a trikona house (the fortune houses 1, 5 and 9). When the planetary lords of these two groups connect — by conjunction, mutual aspect, or by exchanging signs (parivartana) — classical texts describe the result as a Raj Yoga.

The idea rests on classical house theory: kendras represent stability and power, trikonas represent merit and fortune, and a planet that rules both types of house at once is considered especially potent. Several distinct yogas fall under this umbrella, each with its own formation rule and flavour of result.

How to check for Raj Yoga in a kundli — step by step

  1. Identify your ascendant (Lagna). Every house lord is decided relative to your rising sign, so the same yoga rule produces different planets for different ascendants.
  2. List the kendra lords. Note which planets rule houses 1, 4, 7 and 10 from your ascendant.
  3. List the trikona lords. Note which planets rule houses 1, 5 and 9.
  4. Look for a link between the two groups. Check whether any kendra lord and any trikona lord sit together in one house, aspect each other, or occupy each other's sign (an exchange). Any of these connections can form a Raj Yoga.
  5. Weigh the strength of the planets involved. The calculator above works out these house lordships and connections automatically from your birth details and lists the yogas it finds — but a yoga formed by strong, well-placed planets carries far more weight than one formed by weak or afflicted ones.

Common types of Raj Yoga

Vedic texts describe many named Raj Yogas; some of the most commonly cited are:

Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga — formed when the lords of the 9th house (dharma, fortune) and the 10th house (karma, career) join by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange — considered one of the strongest Raj Yogas.
Kendra-Trikona Raj Yoga — the general case: any lord of a kendra house (1, 4, 7, 10) linked with any lord of a trikona house (1, 5, 9) by conjunction, aspect or sign exchange.
Viparita Raj Yoga — formed when the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses (the dusthana or difficult houses) combine with each other — success that follows overcoming hardship.
Neecha Bhanga Raj Yoga — a debilitated planet whose weakness is cancelled by specific conditions, turning apparent weakness into a source of strength.
Maha Purusha Yoga — formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn sits in a kendra in its own or exalted sign, giving each its own named yoga (Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya, Shasha).

Why Raj Yoga matters — and its honest limits

Raj Yogas are read as signals of potential — they point to periods and areas of life where growth, recognition or authority are more available, not a guarantee that they will automatically arrive. The same yoga rule can produce a strong result in one chart and a muted one in another, depending on the strength (shadbala), placement and dignity of the planets involved, and on which dasha is running. A single yoga is never the whole chart — a full reading weighs it alongside the ascendant, the house lords, planetary strength and the current dasha before drawing any conclusion. How raja yogas are found

The calculator casts your Vedic birth chart and checks it against classical rules — chiefly relationships between the lords of the kendra (angular) and trikona (trine) houses, plus other well-known combinations. Any that match are listed as raja yogas, with the other yogas your chart forms shown alongside. Yogas are tendencies to reflect on, not guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Raj Yoga?
A raja yoga is a classical planetary combination in Vedic astrology traditionally associated with success, authority and prosperity — most often formed by a link between the kendra (angular) and trikona (trine) house lords.
How many raja yogas can a chart have?
A chart may have none, one, or several. The number alone does not decide anything — a single well-placed yoga can matter more than many weak ones.
Does a raja yoga guarantee wealth or power?
No. A raja yoga is one factor among many and describes a tendency, not a guarantee. It is best read as a lens for reflection alongside the whole chart.
What if my chart has no raja yoga?
That is very common and not a negative. Raja yogas are only one of many combinations, and their absence says nothing final about your life or potential.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes — yogas depend on the precise house positions, which shift with the birth time and place, so accurate details give the most reliable result.
