What is a Nakshatra (birth star)?

A Nakshatra is a “lunar mansion” — one of the 27 equal segments the zodiac is divided into in Vedic astrology, each spanning 13°20′. Your birth Nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, so it is sometimes called your Janma Nakshatra or birth star. Where the Rashi (Moon sign) gives the broad emotional nature, the Nakshatra adds a finer layer of temperament, and it is the anchor of the Vimshottari dasha timing system.

How to find your Nakshatra — step by step

1. Enter date, time and place of birth. The birth time matters because the Moon changes Nakshatra roughly every 24 hours, and the pada (quarter) far more often.
2. The Moon’s longitude is computed using the Lahiri ayanamsa and mapped to one of the 27 Nakshatras.
3. Read your Nakshatra and pada. Each Nakshatra has four padas (quarters) of 3°20′; your pada refines the reading and helps choose the first syllable of a traditional name.
4. Note the ruling planet. Your Nakshatra’s lord (see the list below) begins your Vimshottari dasha sequence.
