Dasha — Vedic Astrology Explained

A planetary period system in Vedic astrology that assigns each graha a specific span of influence over a native's life in sequence.

Definition & classical context

Dasha (Sanskrit: daśā, "condition" or "planetary period") refers to the system in Vedic astrology that divides a native's life into sequential periods governed by each of the nine grahas. The most widely used system — Vimshottari Dasha ("120-year cycle") — assigns total periods of 6 to 20 years to each planet in a specific order: Ketu (7), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), Mercury (17). The starting point and remaining portion of the first dasha at birth are determined by the natal Moon's nakshatra.

Within each major period (maha dasha), there are sub-periods (antar dasha) for each planet, and within those, further sub-sub-periods (pratyantar dasha), allowing the system to make predictions at a high degree of temporal resolution. Each dasha lord "colours" the life experience of that period according to its natural significations, its house rulership in the natal chart, its sign and nakshatra placement, and the aspects and conjunctions it receives.

The dasha system is one of Vedic astrology's most practically powerful tools, used to time major life events such as marriage, career changes, health challenges, financial peaks, and spiritual openings. Unlike Western astrology's emphasis on outer-planet transits for major timing, Jyotish primarily uses the dasha sequence as the backbone of predictive work, validating it against transits (gochar) for further precision.
