Definition & classical context
Gochar (Sanskrit: go "cow" / "to move" + cara "motion", meaning "movement through") refers to the transit of planets as they move in real time through the signs of the sidereal zodiac and form aspects to the positions of planets in a native's birth chart. In Vedic astrology, gochar is used as a secondary timing tool, validating and refining the predictions of the operating dasha. The transit of slow-moving planets — Saturn (Shani), Jupiter (Guru), and the nodes Rahu and Ketu — is considered most influential, as they spend extended periods (months to years) in each sign.
Gochar analysis in Jyotish is primarily conducted from the natal Moon sign (Chandra Rashi) rather than from the ascendant, as is common in Western astrology. The Moon's sign is considered the most sensitive point for transit influences on day-to-day experience. Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd houses from the Moon forms Sade Sati; Jupiter transiting the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th from the Moon is considered highly beneficial. Rahu and Ketu's axis brings nodal themes — sudden changes, obsessive focus, karmic encounters — wherever it falls.
Gochar is particularly important for timing auspicious activities: when does Jupiter transit the 7th house for marriage? When does Saturn complete its transit of the 7th for partnership healing? Combined with the dasha map, gochar allows astrologers to narrow event timing from the year level to the month level, and sometimes to the week. Daily Panchang consultations also incorporate ongoing gochar analysis for fine-grained muhurta selection.
