What is Purnima?

Purnima is the full-moon night, the fifteenth and final tithi of the Shukla (waxing) paksha, when the Moon stands directly opposite the Sun and its disc is fully visible. It occurs once each lunar month, so about twelve to thirteen Purnimas fall in a year. In tradition it is regarded as broadly auspicious — a time of fullness, completion, brightness and sattva (purity) — and many devotees keep a Purnima Vrat and worship the Moon.

Purnima and the lunar month

The full moon marks a turning point in the Hindu calendar. In the Purnimanta system, followed across much of North India, a lunar month ends on Purnima; in the Amanta system of the South and West, Purnima falls in the middle of the month. Each month takes its name from the nakshatra the Moon occupies on or near the full-moon night — so Chaitra, Vaishakha, Ashadha and the rest are named for these star groupings.

The Satyanarayan Vrat and full-moon worship

Purnima is one of the most favoured days for the Satyanarayan Puja and Katha, in which devotees honour Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan, listen to the traditional story and share prasad. Many observe a Purnima Vrat, a day-long fast broken after sighting or worshipping the Moon (Chandra). Married women keep certain full-moon fasts. The tradition frames these as acts of devotion, gratitude and discipline rather than guaranteed outcomes.

The major Purnimas of the year

Several full moons carry special meaning. Guru Purnima, in Ashadha, is kept in gratitude to one's guru. Buddha Purnima, in Vaishakha, marks the birth of Gautama Buddha. Sharad Purnima, in Ashwin, is when kheer is left under the moonlight, said in tradition to shower nectar. Kartik Purnima, celebrated as Dev Diwali, is a day for the holy Ganga snan. Holika Dahan takes place on Phalguna Purnima, on the eve of Holi.

What is done on Purnima

Customary observances centre on purity and giving. Devotees take a holy bath (snan) at dawn, ideally in a sacred river, keep a fast (vrat), and offer daan (charity) to those in need. Worship of the Moon and of Vishnu, the Satyanarayan Katha, and staying awake through the night in devotion are common. These are traditional practices offered in a spirit of faith and thanksgiving, honoured as custom rather than as promises of reward.

The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha

Traditionally read on Purnima, the Satyanarayan Katha teaches devotion to Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayan, the embodiment of truth. As the katha tells it, the sage Narada learns the vrat from Vishnu and shares it with the world. Its parable follows a poor Brahmin, a woodcutter, King Ulkamukh, and above all the merchant Sadhu Vaishya and his daughter Kalavati. Each prospers while keeping the vrat and honouring the prasad with faith, yet meets hardship — lost wealth, a sunken ship, imprisonment — when the vow is neglected or the prasad disrespected, and each is restored on returning to it with devotion. The moral drawn is that sincere faith and honouring the prasad bring wellbeing, while neglect and pride invite downfall.

Satyanarayan Puja Samagri

A simple Satyanarayan puja calls for a few traditional items gathered with care:

• Banana plant or leaves for the mandap
• An idol or image of Satyanarayan (Vishnu)
• Panchamrit
• Tulsi leaves
• The sheera / sapatha prasad (wheat flour, ghee, sugar and banana)
• Roli and akshat
• Betel leaves and nuts
• Seasonal fruits, especially banana
• A ghee lamp
• Incense
