Definition & classical context

Manglik Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Mangal Dosha) arises when the planet Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a birth chart — though some classical texts include only a subset of these houses, and traditions vary by region and lineage. The 7th house governs partnership, and the 8th house governs longevity and shared resources; Mars in these positions is said by classical texts to introduce friction, assertiveness, or sudden disruption into marital life.

The Sanskrit word mangala (auspicious) applied to Mars creates a linguistic irony: Mars governs courage, energy, and initiative, but its fiery placement in houses of relationship can, according to classical analysis, indicate a partner who is strong-willed or whose relationship energy requires careful channelling. Traditional remedies include marrying another Manglik, performing specific pujas (such as those to Mars or to Hanuman, Mars's devotee), and conducting symbolic "marriages" to a tree or deity before the human marriage.

Contemporary Jyotish commentary increasingly contextualises Manglik Dosha: many astrologers note that a single planetary placement must be weighed against the full chart, and that benefic aspects from Jupiter, or the presence of cancellation conditions (dosha nivarana), can significantly mitigate the effect. The dosha is best understood as an indicator of a particular marital energy to be aware of and consciously managed, rather than an immutable obstacle.
