Lagna (Sanskrit: lagna, from the root lag, "to cling" or "to rise") is the ascendant — the degree of the zodiac sign that is rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and location of birth. In the Vedic chart, the lagna determines the first house and thereby the numbering and significations of all twelve houses. It is considered the most personal and body-level marker in the chart, governing the physical constitution, outward personality, and the lens through which the individual experiences and engages with the world.
The lord of the lagna (lagnesha) — the planet that rules the ascending sign — is considered the primary karaka (significator) of the native's overall wellbeing, physical vitality, and life direction. Its placement, sign, nakshatra, and relationship to other planets strongly colour the entire chart reading. A strong, well-placed lagnesha generally indicates resilience and the capacity to fulfil the chart's potentials; a weak or afflicted lagnesha can indicate constitutional challenges or obstacles to self-expression.
In addition to the primary lagna, Jyotish uses several other sensitive ascendants: the Chandra lagna (Moon-sign-based chart), Surya lagna (Sun-based), and various special lagnas such as the hora lagna (wealth) and ghati lagna (power), each adding additional layers of nuance to the interpretation. Together, these perspectives allow the astrologer to assess a native's potential from multiple angles simultaneously.
