Guna Milan (Sanskrit: guṇa, "quality" or "attribute"; milan, "meeting" or "union") is the traditional Vedic astrological method for assessing compatibility between two individuals for marriage. The system evaluates eight specific factors — called Ashtakuta (eight categories) — by comparing the nakshatras of the prospective partners' natal Moons. Each factor carries a maximum score, and the total out of 36 points is used as a broad compatibility indicator. The eight categories are: Varna (spiritual evolution), Vashya (temperament control), Tara (birth star compatibility), Yoni (sexual nature), Graha Maitri (planetary friendship), Gana (temperament class), Bhakuta (Moon-sign relationship), and Nadi (constitution and progeny).
A score of 18 or above is traditionally considered acceptable for marriage, while 24 or more is regarded as good, and 30 or more as excellent. However, classical texts also prescribe certain combinations that are considered highly inauspicious regardless of total score — notably Nadi Dosha (matching Nadi categories, said to affect fertility and longevity) and Bhakuta Dosha (certain Moon-sign relationships). Cancellation conditions (dosha nivarana) for these doshas are also defined.
Modern astrologers increasingly emphasise that Guna Milan is a useful starting framework but must be considered alongside a full kundli comparison — examining house overlaps, the fifth and seventh house lords, Jupiter's role, and the overall strength of both charts. A high Guna Milan score does not override a deeply incompatible full-chart comparison, and vice versa.
