Past dates are shown faded. Each vrat name opens that month’s vrat page, with the puja timings.

Why Chaturthi matters

Chaturthi, the fourth tithi, belongs to Ganesha — Muhurta Chintamani names him its lord — and after Ekadashi it is the most widely kept tithi of the month. It comes twice in every lunar month, and each half has its own vrat. The Shukla Chaturthi is Vinayaka, or Varad, Chaturthi: Ganesha is worshipped at midday and the fast does not wait for the moon; the one in Bhadrapada is the great Ganesh Chaturthi. The Krishna Chaturthi is Sankashti, “deliverance from difficulty”, kept until moonrise, when the moon is offered arghya and the fast is broken. The Magha Sankashti is Sakat Chauth, and a Sankashti that falls on a Tuesday is Angarki, the most sought after of the year. Devotees offer durva grass, red flowers and modak, and recite the Ganapati Atharvashirsha or the Sankashti katha. The blessings described here are those tradition attributes to the vrat, offered as context rather than promises.

The Shukla Chaturthi falls about four days after Amavasya, when the waxing crescent is still thin and sets in the evening. The Krishna Chaturthi falls about four days after Purnima, when the waning moon rises late at night — which is why a Sankashti fast can run well into the evening. Both carry the same tithi name, but their observance rules differ, and so do the days they land on.

How the date is fixed

Each row above is a vrat day, fixed by our panchang engine for New Delhi and matched against DrikPanchang. A tithi can begin at any hour, so the vrat day is not simply “the day the tithi starts”. The general rule is udaya tithi — the tithi present at sunrise names the day — but each vrat adds its own deciding hour: Sankashti needs Chaturthi at moonrise, while Vinayaka Chaturthi’s puja is done at midday. That is why the date in the first column can be the day before the tithi touches a sunrise, and why regional panchangs sometimes differ by a day. The tithi window column gives the exact span in IST, so you can check any row yourself. Month names in the text (Kartik, Margashirsha, Magha and so on) follow the North Indian purnimanta calendar; in the amanta calendar a Krishna-paksha day belongs to the month before.

Ganesha is the lord of Chaturthi. With Navami and Chaturdashi it forms the Rikta (“empty”) group of tithis. Muhurat texts traditionally keep Rikta tithis for worship, fasting and finishing work rather than for beginnings — which is exactly how Chaturthi is kept.

Chaturthi — common questions

When is the next Chaturthi vrat?

Shukla paksha vrat: Vinayaka Chaturthi (Kartika) on Friday, 13 November 2026; Chaturthi runs 12 Nov 6:10 PM to 13 Nov 8:43 PM. Krishna paksha vrat: Ganadhipa Sankashti on Friday, 27 November 2026; Chaturthi runs 27 Nov 9:49 AM to 28 Nov 6:40 AM.

How many Chaturthi vrat days are there in 2026?

Our New Delhi data has 25 Chaturthi vrat days in 2026 — 12 in the Shukla paksha and 13 in the Krishna paksha. A calendar year holds 12 or 13 of each paksha's Chaturthi, because about 12.4 lunar months fit in a solar year.

What is the difference between Sankashti and Vinayaka Chaturthi?

Both are Ganesha’s Chaturthi. Vinayaka (Varad) Chaturthi is the Shukla-paksha Chaturthi, worshipped at midday without waiting for the moon. Sankashti is the Krishna-paksha Chaturthi; its fast continues until moonrise, when the moon is offered arghya.

Why is the Chaturthi vrat sometimes a day before or after the tithi begins?

A tithi can begin at any hour, and each vrat has its own deciding time — Sankashti needs Chaturthi at moonrise, while Vinayaka Chaturthi’s puja is done at midday. So the vrat day can differ from the day the tithi begins, and regional panchangs can differ by a day.
