The seven vaars
Vaar is one of the five limbs of the panchang, alongside tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Each of the seven is ruled by a graha and carries a nature that Muhurta Chintamani, the standard text on electional timing, uses when it pairs weekdays with nakshatras. The vaar alone never fixes a muhurat — it is read together with the tithi, nakshatra and lagna — but it sets the tone of the day in tradition.
Sunday (Ravivar)
Ruling graha: Sun · Deity worshipped: Surya · Nature: sthira (dhruva) — fixed
Muhurta Chintamani counts Sunday among the sthira (fixed) days, so tradition chooses it for work that is meant to last — laying a foundation, planting, taking up a post or responsibility — and, as the Sun’s day, for dealings with government and people in authority. Many begin the day with an arghya of water to the rising Sun.
On Sunday, Rahu Kaal is the 8th of the day’s eight parts — about 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Monday (Somvar)
Ruling graha: Moon · Deity worshipped: Shiva · Nature: chara (chala) — movable
Monday is chara (movable) in Muhurta Chintamani, the Moon’s day, so it is traditionally preferred for travel, vehicles, gardens and anything that moves or flows. It is also the day of Shiva worship: many keep a Somvar vrat, and the Mondays of Shravan are especially observed.
On Monday, Rahu Kaal is the 2nd of the day’s eight parts — about 7:30 am – 9:00 am with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Tuesday (Mangalvar)
Ruling graha: Mars · Deity worshipped: Hanuman · Nature: ugra (krura) — forceful
Tuesday, Mars’s day, is classed ugra (forceful). Tradition gives it to work that needs courage and drive — sport and competition, work with fire, metal and machines, and tasks that call for a firm decision. Hanuman puja and the recitation of the Sundarkand are customary on Tuesdays.
On Tuesday, Rahu Kaal is the 7th of the day’s eight parts — about 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Wednesday (Budhvar)
Ruling graha: Mercury · Deity worshipped: Ganesha · Nature: mishra (sadharana) — mixed
Wednesday is mishra (mixed) in Muhurta Chintamani, suited to everyday work of every kind. As Mercury’s day it is the traditional choice for study, writing, trade, accounts and communication, and Ganesha is worshipped at the start of new work.
On Wednesday, Rahu Kaal is the 5th of the day’s eight parts — about 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Thursday (Guruvar)
Ruling graha: Jupiter · Deity worshipped: Vishnu and Brihaspati · Nature: kshipra (laghu) — swift
Thursday is kshipra (swift) — Jupiter’s day, given in Muhurta Chintamani to light, quick undertakings: learning and teaching, trade, starting a course of medicine, short journeys. Jupiter is the guru, so it is also the day for religious study, honouring teachers and the Thursday (Guruvar) vrat to Vishnu and Brihaspati.
On Thursday, Rahu Kaal is the 6th of the day’s eight parts — about 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Friday (Shukravar)
Ruling graha: Venus · Deity worshipped: Lakshmi · Nature: mridu (maitra) — gentle
Friday, Venus’s day, is mridu (gentle). Tradition favours it for pleasant, refined work — music, dance and the arts, new clothes and jewellery, friendships and celebrations. Lakshmi puja is customary on Friday evenings, and many keep a Friday vrat.
On Friday, Rahu Kaal is the 4th of the day’s eight parts — about 10:30 am – 12:00 pm with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Saturday (Shanivar)TODAY
Ruling graha: Saturn · Deity worshipped: Shani Dev · Nature: tikshna (daruna) — sharp
Saturday, Saturn’s day, is tikshna (sharp) in Muhurta Chintamani. Tradition gives it to work that needs endurance and discipline — long or heavy labour, iron and machinery, and clearing away what is no longer needed. An oil lamp for Shani Dev and Hanuman puja are customary on Saturday evenings.
On Saturday, Rahu Kaal is the 3rd of the day’s eight parts — about 9:00 am – 10:30 am with a 6:00 am sunrise.
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika by vaar
The daytime from sunrise to sunset is split into eight equal parts, and each vaar gives a fixed part to Rahu, Yama and Gulika. The times below assume a 6:00 am sunrise and 6:00 pm sunset; real times shift with your city’s sunrise, which is why today’s Rahu Kaal above is computed for New Delhi.

Questions about the vaar
Aaj kaun sa vaar hai? (What day is it today?)
Today is Saturday, 7 November 2026 (IST). In the panchang, Shanivar begins at sunrise (6:38 am, New Delhi) and runs until the next sunrise; the tithi at sunrise is Krishna Trayodashi, until 10:48 am.
Kal kaun sa vaar hai?
Kal Ravivar, 8 November — tomorrow is Sunday; the tithi at sunrise will be Krishna Chaturdashi.
When does the vaar change in the panchang?
The civil date changes at midnight, but the panchang counts a vaar from one sunrise to the next. The hours between midnight and sunrise therefore still belong to the previous vaar when a muhurat is worked out — 4 am on a Saturday is still Shukravar in the panchang.
Which planet rules each vaar?
Sunday (Ravivar) — Sun; Monday (Somvar) — Moon; Tuesday (Mangalvar) — Mars; Wednesday (Budhvar) — Mercury; Thursday (Guruvar) — Jupiter; Friday (Shukravar) — Venus; Saturday (Shanivar) — Saturn. Each vaar is named after the graha that rules it.
Why does the week run Sunday, Monday, Tuesday…?
The order comes from the horas. A day has 24 horas, ruled in turn by Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon — slowest to fastest. The planet of the first hora at sunrise names the day; 24 horas later the first hora falls to the planet three places further on, which gives Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn.
What is Rahu Kaal today?
In New Delhi today, Rahu Kaal is 9:22 am – 10:44 am (IST). On a Saturday it is the 3rd of eight equal parts of the daytime, so it moves with sunrise and sunset; tradition avoids starting new work in it.
