Brihaspati Mantra

Brihaspati is the graha of wisdom, dharma and fortune — Jupiter in the Western scheme, held in Jyotish to be guru to the gods themselves, the teacher whose counsel even Indra is said to seek. Mantras addressed to him are chanted on Thursdays, during Brihaspati Mahadasha and Antardasha, and by anyone seeking guidance, learning or good fortune. As with the other graha mantras here, there is no single one — the family below serves different occasions.
The 4 Brihaspati Mantras
"Brihaspati Mantra" is not a single verse. These are the forms in traditional use, each with its own purpose and count.
| Form | Opening | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Brihaspati Beej Mantra | ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः | 19,000 over the course of a practice, or 108 daily |
| Brihaspati Moola Mantra | ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः | 108 daily, on a Thursday |
| Brihaspati Gayatri Mantra | | 108 |
| Navagraha Stotra (Brihaspati verse) | | — |
Brihaspati Beej Mantra
Om Grāṁ Grīṁ Grauṁ Saḥ Gurave Namaḥ
The seed form. Grāṁ, grīṁ and grauṁ carry no dictionary sense of their own — tantric sound-seeds tuned to the graha — and the mantra closes as a plain salutation to him as Guru, by his most common name.
Count: 19,000 over the course of a practice, or 108 daily
Brihaspati Moola Mantra
Om Bṛṁ Bṛhaspataye Namaḥ
"Bṛṁ" is his own seed syllable; the rest is a bare salutation by name. This is the one usually given to someone beginning the practice.
Count: 108 daily, on a Thursday
Brihaspati Gayatri Mantra
Om Vṛṣabhadhvajāya Vidmahe Karuṇīhastāya Dhīmahi, Tanno Guruḥ Prachodayāt.
Built on the Gayatri metre. It names him Vrishabhadhvaja, "the bull-bannered one", holding compassion in hand, then asks that Guru direct the intellect. Published collections give other versions too, naming him Angirasa (after the sage his lineage is traced to) or Gurudeva instead; the sense of each stays close to the others.
Count: 108
Navagraha Stotra (Brihaspati verse)
Devānāṁ Cha Ṛṣīṇāṁ Cha Guruṁ Kāñchanasannibham, Buddhibhūtaṁ Trilokeśaṁ Taṁ Namāmi Bṛhaspatim.
Brihaspati's verse from the nine-verse Navagraha Stotra attributed to the sage Vyasa. It names him guru of the gods and the sages alike, of golden radiance, the embodiment of intellect itself, and lord of the three worlds, before bowing to him by name.
When and how to chant
Day: Thursday
- Thursday is the day associated with Brihaspati; morning is the time usually kept.
- Face north-east while chanting. Yellow is his colour: yellow clothing, flowers and a lamp of ghee are customary.
- A mala of yellow sapphire-adjacent beads or turmeric-dyed thread is traditional where observed; a plain rudraksha mala serves otherwise. Count in rounds of 108.
- Turmeric, gram (chana dal), yellow clothing and books are commonly donated on Thursdays.
What tradition holds
These mantras are traditionally taken up during Brihaspati Mahadasha and Antardasha, for guidance, learning, marriage prospects and the fortune tradition holds he governs. A well-placed Brihaspati is held to give wisdom, prosperity and good counsel; an afflicted one, poor judgement or setbacks in these same areas. These are the reasons tradition gives for keeping these mantras; they are not claims about outcomes.
Is Brihaspati actually placed against you?
A mantra is chosen for a placement, not for a planet in the abstract. Whether Brihaspati is running your Mahadasha, exalted, debilitated, or none of these depends on your birth date, time and place — which is a calculation, not a guess.

Frequently asked questions
What is the mantra of Brihaspati?
There is no single one. The shortest is the moola mantra, Om Bṛṁ Bṛhaspataye Namaḥ. The beej mantra, Om Grāṁ Grīṁ Grauṁ Saḥ Gurave Namaḥ, is the more widely chanted seed form. The gayatri and the Navagraha Stotra verse are set out above, each with Devanagari, transliteration and sense.
How should the Brihaspati mantra be chanted 108 times?
Facing north-east, on Thursday morning, counting one full round of 108 beads. A plain rudraksha mala is acceptable where the traditional yellow-toned mala is not available.
What is a weak Brihaspati, and what strengthens it?
Tradition points to the mantras above, chanted on Thursdays, alongside donating turmeric, gram, yellow clothing or books on the same day. These are the remedies tradition gives, not a substitute for what an afflicted Jupiter actually shows in a chart.
How many times should the Brihaspati beej mantra be chanted?
One full round of 108 daily is the common prescription, with 19,000 over the course of a practice as the fuller, formal count some traditions prescribe.
