Saraswati Mantra

Saraswati is the goddess of learning, speech and the arts — held in tradition to be the source of knowledge itself, invoked before study, examinations, music and any creative work. Mantras addressed to her are chanted on Basant Panchami above all, and by students and anyone seeking clarity of thought or expression. As with the other deity mantras here, there is no single one — the family below serves different occasions.
The 4 Saraswati Mantras
"Saraswati Mantra" is not a single verse. These are the forms in traditional use, each with its own purpose and count.
| Form | Opening | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Saraswati Beej Mantra | ऐं | 108 daily |
| Saraswati Moola Mantra | ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः | 108 daily, before study |
| Saraswati Gayatri Mantra | ॐ ऐं वाग्देव्यै विद्महे कामराजाय धीमहि। | 108 |
| Ya Kundendu Vandana | या कुन्देन्दुतुषारहारधवला या शुभ्रवस्त्राव | 1 or 3, before study |
Saraswati Beej Mantra
ऐं
Aiṁ
A single syllable, known as the Vagbhava beej — the seed of speech itself. It carries no dictionary sense of its own and is held in tradition to be the root sound behind learning and articulate expression; it is carried inside nearly every other mantra addressed to her.
Count: 108 daily
Saraswati Moola Mantra
ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः
Om Aiṁ Sarasvatyai Namaḥ
The Vagbhava beej combined with a salutation by name. This is the one usually given to a student or beginner, and the one most comfortably kept as a daily round before study.
Count: 108 daily, before study
Saraswati Gayatri Mantra
ॐ ऐं वाग्देव्यै विद्महे कामराजाय धीमहि। तन्नो देवी प्रचोदयात्॥
Om Aiṁ Vāgdevyai Vidmahe Kāmarājāya Dhīmahi, Tanno Devī Prachodayāt.
Built on the Gayatri metre. It names her Vagdevi, "goddess of speech", then asks that the devi direct the intellect.
Count: 108
Ya Kundendu Vandana
Yā Kundendutuṣārahāradhavalā Yā Śubhravastrāvṛtā, Yā Vīṇāvaradaṇḍamaṇḍitakarā Yā Śvetapadmāsanā, Yā Brahmāchyutaśaṅkaraprabhṛtibhirdevaiḥ Sadā Pūjitā, Sā Māṁ Pātu Sarasvatī Bhagavatī Niḥśeṣajāḍyāpahā.
The best known Saraswati verse, recited before classes and exams across India. It describes her as white as jasmine, moon and frost, dressed in pure white, her hands adorned with the veena and a boon-granting staff, seated on a white lotus, worshipped always by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — then asks that she protect the one who recites it and remove all dullness of mind.
Count: 1 or 3, before study
When and how to chant
Day: Basant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami) above all; Fridays are also commonly kept
- Basant Panchami, in the bright fortnight of Magha, is her principal day; Fridays are also commonly kept.
- Face east. White flowers, white clothing and a yellow or white offering reflect the colours tradition associates with her and the season of Basant Panchami respectively.
- A crystal (sphatik) mala is traditional; count in rounds of 108.
- Books, musical instruments and writing implements are placed before her image for blessing, especially on Basant Panchami, rather than used in the puja themselves.
What tradition holds
Saraswati is approached for clarity of thought, speech and creative expression — before study, examinations, music, writing or any work tradition classes as intellectual or artistic. She is invoked alongside Lakshmi and Durga as one of the Tridevi, but kept distinct from both: tradition holds that wealth and power mean little without the discernment she is said to grant. These are the reasons tradition gives for keeping these mantras; they are not a substitute for the work of actually studying or practising a craft.

Frequently asked questions
What is the mantra for Saraswati?
There is no single one. The simplest is the moola mantra, Om Aiṁ Sarasvatyai Namaḥ, built on her Vagbhava beej, Aiṁ. The gayatri and the Ya Kundendu vandana — the verse recited before classes and exams across India — are set out above as well, each with Devanagari, transliteration and sense.
What are the 5 mantras of Saraswati?
There is no single fixed list of five under that name across sources. This page gives the four most consistently published and chanted forms — beej, moola, gayatri and the Ya Kundendu vandana — rather than a specific numbered set.
What are the 108 names of Saraswati?
This refers to her Ashtottara Shatanamavali, 108 names recited together, one per bead of a mala — a different tradition from the handful of distinct mantras this page covers, and one this page does not reproduce in full.
What is the mantra for success in exams?
The Ya Kundendu vandana is the verse most recited before exams specifically, asking her to remove all dullness of mind. The moola mantra, Om Aiṁ Sarasvatyai Namaḥ, is the shorter form kept for ongoing daily study.
