Surya Mantra

Surya is the graha of soul, authority and vitality — the one planet in Jyotish that is also the literal source of light and life the rest of the system orbits. Mantras addressed to him are chanted at sunrise, offered with water in the Surya Namaskar practice, and taken up during Surya Mahadasha or wherever confidence and recognition feel lacking. As with the other graha mantras here, there is no single one — the family below serves different occasions.
The 4 Surya Mantras
"Surya Mantra" is not a single verse. These are the forms in traditional use, each with its own purpose and count.
| Form | Opening | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Surya Beej Mantra | ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः | 108 daily, or on a Sunday |
| Surya Moola Mantra | ॐ सूर्याय नमः | 108 daily, or at sunrise |
| Gayatri Mantra | ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो दे | 108, traditionally at sunrise, noon and sunset |
| Navagraha Stotra (Surya verse) | जपाकुसुमसंकाशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम्। | — |
Surya Beej Mantra
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
Om Hrāṁ Hrīṁ Hrauṁ Saḥ Sūryāya Namaḥ
The seed form. Hrāṁ, hrīṁ and hrauṁ carry no dictionary sense of their own — tantric sound-seeds tuned to the graha — and the mantra closes as a plain salutation to Surya by name.
Count: 108 daily, or on a Sunday
Surya Moola Mantra
ॐ सूर्याय नमः
Om Sūryāya Namaḥ
The simplest form — a bare salutation with no seed syllable attached. This is the one usually given to someone beginning the practice, and the one offered with water at sunrise.
Count: 108 daily, or at sunrise
Gayatri Mantra
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥
Om Bhūrbhuvaḥ Svaḥ Tatsaviturvareṇyaṁ Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi, Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Prachodayāt.
The Gayatri mantra most people know by that name alone is itself addressed to Surya as Savitr, the solar deity of the Rig Veda — it is not a separate "Surya Gayatri" the way other grahas have their own, but the original the form itself is named after. It asks the adorable splendour of that god to illuminate our intellect.
Count: 108, traditionally at sunrise, noon and sunset
Navagraha Stotra (Surya verse)
जपाकुसुमसंकाशं काश्यपेयं महाद्युतिम्। तमोऽरिं सर्वपापघ्नं प्रणतोऽस्मि दिवाकरम्॥
Japākusumasaṅkāśaṁ Kāśyapeyaṁ Mahādyutim, Tamo'riṁ Sarvapāpaghnaṁ Praṇato'smi Divākaram.
Surya's verse from the nine-verse Navagraha Stotra attributed to the sage Vyasa. It describes him as red as the hibiscus flower, son of the sage Kashyapa, of great radiance, the enemy of darkness and destroyer of all sin, before bowing to him as Divakara, the maker of day.
When and how to chant
Day: Sunday
- Sunrise is the time kept above all others; Sunday is the day associated with him in the weekly cycle.
- Face east. Offer water (Arghya) from a copper vessel, ideally with red sandalwood, red flowers or kumkum mixed in.
- A ruby or rudraksha mala is traditional; count in rounds of 108.
- Wheat, jaggery, copper and red clothing are commonly donated on Sundays.
What tradition holds
These mantras are traditionally taken up during Surya Mahadasha and Antardasha, for confidence, authority, recognition from those in power, and vitality where it feels lacking. The daily water offering at sunrise is kept as an ongoing practice regardless of placement, distinct from the mantras taken up specifically for a difficult Surya. These are the reasons tradition gives for keeping them; they are not claims about outcomes.
Is Surya actually placed against you?
A mantra is chosen for a placement, not for a planet in the abstract. Whether Surya is running your Mahadasha, exalted, debilitated, or none of these depends on your birth date, time and place — which is a calculation, not a guess.

Frequently asked questions
What is the mantra of Surya Dev?
There is no single one. The simplest is the moola mantra, Om Sūryāya Namaḥ, offered with water at sunrise. The beej mantra, Om Hrāṁ Hrīṁ Hrauṁ Saḥ Sūryāya Namaḥ, is the seed form. The universal Gayatri mantra is itself addressed to him as Savitr, and a verse from the Navagraha Stotra is set out above as well.
What is the mantra for offering water to the Sun?
Om Sūryāya Namaḥ is the simplest form said while pouring water from a copper vessel at sunrise, facing east. The beej or gayatri forms are also used by those who keep a fuller practice.
What are the 12 mantras of Surya Dev?
This usually refers to his twelve names recited during Surya Namaskar — Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Pushan, Hiranyagarbha, Marichi, Aditya, Savitr, Arka and Bhaskara — one for each of the twelve postures, rather than twelve separate mantras in the sense the other forms on this page are.
What is the 108 times mantra of Surya?
Any of the forms above can be counted through a full mala of 108 — the beej, the moola, or the gayatri. The beej mantra is the one most chanting recordings online are built around.
